The new introductory training program for IGP:FLIP is now ready. It can be requested as a custom package at any time. IGP:FLIP Portal users will be advised shortly of the schedules for each training module. These will be interactive Online sessions with regular breaks for questions and repeats.
The program will be run over 10 consecutive days in two time zone sessions. Europe/America's and Europe/Africa/West Asia. A special schedule for Oceania and East Asia will be announced separately.
Training environment. It is recommended that two computers are available at the learning end of the lessons. One for display of the instruction, the other for emulating the instructions given for learning reinforcement.
The structure of the course largely follows the sequence of document preparation from input to output, with suitable diversions to introduce the supporting modules.
1. IGP:FLIP - Product Introduction
Duration: 1 hour.
This session will cover the broad capabilities and major functional areas of the application including:
Catalog system, Main Writer interface, Document Designer, Design Profiles, Preview pane features, Formats on Demand, Publish Now, Archiving, Font manager, Media Manager, Template Manager, Revision manager, Content Blocks.
The outcome of this session will be a broad understanding of the production environment and the tools to carry out basic struture styling of a text manuscript, importing a manuscript and generating output formats.
2. Structure Styling in Detail
Duration 1 hour.
Structure styling of a manuscript allows high value XML tagging from a correctly styled Word Document. This session handles tricks and techniques for getting manuscript styling correct first time. It covers document clean-up, section styles, block styling. The example will be a simple short novel, and then a more structured trade non-fiction style book.
The outcome of this session will be a detailed understanding of how to prepare a manuscript for import and conversion to XML, where it can fail, how to recover and repeat.
3. IGP:Document Designer Introduction
Duration: 1.5 hours.
This session introduces the capabilities and limitations of IGP:Document Designer. It also delves a little into the mechanical aspects of how templates work. This first session will cover Document setup, Section setups, page makeup issues, and general navigation and tool use. It will also show how IGP:Document Designer is used to create simultaneous Print and e-book designs.
The outcome of this session will be the ability to immediately start using IGP:Document Designer to create real book designs.
4. Font Manager in detail
Duration: 1 hour.
This session covers fonts and how they are loaded and used. This session will show loading new fonts from the Font Manager, and using them through the system and into IGP:Document Designer to use them on a document. It will also discuss using ornamental and symbol fonts for special styling.
The outcome of this session will be the ability to manage and maintain fonts for a portal or installation.
5. Media Manager in detail
Duration: 1 hour
This session covers the various aspects of managing images for multiple format generation. It shows various uses of images in print, online and e-books. It explains how to configure and upload images, plus information on image preparation to ensure you PDF is PDFX1A compliant, while your e-books images are ready for action in various formats.\
The outcome of this session is how to prepare and manage images for multi-format production.
6. XML Structuring in IGP:Writer using Content Blocks
Duration: 1.5 hours.
IGP:FLIP has over 800 content block options. The good news is they are classified so you don't have to remember every one of them, just what you want to do to your content. This session covers the main blocks that affect standard trade publishing, and also includes the special paragraph and inline content details that make the difference in getting to the multi-format finishing line quickly and easily.
The outcome of this session will be confidence in locating, using, modifying, copying, pasting and reusing content blocks.
7. Formats on Demand and Publish Now
Duration 1 hour.
This is a two part session.
A. Formats on Demand has a number of options to allow you to create ePubs for specific devices, or generic distribution. This session shows you what they all mean, and what you can do to make your content ready for the widest range of devices. It also covers making marketing sample e-books.
B. When you are ready to go to print there is a special set of PDF generation tools that are called into play. This shorter second session shows the options and what you can do.
The outcome of this session will be the ability to generate all required outputs instantly at any time for any purpose.
8. IGP:Document Designer in Detail
Duration: 1 hour.
The second session goes into the details of styling a range of Content Blocks, lists and other standard Frontmatter sections and Backmatter sections. It results in a fully styled medium complex trade document with all components.
This session also sets the limits on IGP:Document Designer and shows how it modifies and changes the stylesheets. This session requires some comfort level with simple CSS.
The outcome of this module is a comprehensive understanding of the abilities of IGP:Document Designer and being able to use it for a wide range of book and document styling designs.
9. Typography and Composition
Duration: 1 hour.
The design is done and the last step is line, paragraph, page and section turn fine tuning. This session shows the tools available for text tracking including soft-hyphens, non-breaking hyphens, no-hyphenation rules and other techniques to get the final perfect book out.
There is a special short session on fine tuning drop and raised caps to ensure they sit perfectly in the content.
The outcome of this session is understanding and using the typographic fine tuning tools available to produce fine print ready PDFs.
10. Advanced tips and tricks
Duration: 1 hour.
IGP:FLIP can be used to create online pages, print and e-books. It also has very advanced features with the companion IGP:Reader product for multi-location collaboration, remixing documents together and many other uses. This session is a round-up of these advanced features and how they significantly add to the productivity and quality of your publishing projects.
The outcome of this session is to inspire IGP:FLIP users to the potential available when you own a digital content strategy that is ready for anything.
